In the past, canyoning accidents have occurred time and again in Switzerland. The worst accident occurred in 1999 when 18 tourists and three guides were killed in Saxetbach in the Bernese Oberland. Two years later, six managers of the now-defunct adventure agency that ran the tourist group were found guilty of negligent homicide for failing to adequately assess the risks.

As a result of this accident, safety measures for canyoning in Switzerland were tightened. The Risk Activities Act came into force in 2014. Nevertheless, canyoning accidents occurred again and again, especially in Ticino.

– 18. June 2020: A man disappears during a canyoning trip with a group of nine from Lithuania on the Lodrino River in Ticino. Two days later he is found dead.

– Am 7. August 2001 a father and his daughter from Lucerne are carried away by the masses of water while canyoning in the Nala torrent near Osongna TI and drown when a power station emptied its reservoir. Apparently they had not obtained detailed information from the plant.

– July 27, 1999 45 tourists, guided by a canyoning provider, climbed into the gorge near Saxeten BE. The two middle groups and one person from the first group were hit by the tidal wave of water, stones and branches. 18 tourists and three guides were killed. Of the 21 victims, one has not been found until today.

– July 12, 1998: On a guided tour in the gorge of the Kleine Schliere in Alpnach OW, a participant suffers back injuries.

– 31. May 1997: A Siebner group undertakes a canyoning tour in the Chimpbach Gorge on the Lenk. While abseiling in a waterfall, a 24-year-old German participant gets stuck with the rope, cannot be released from his position in time and drowns.
