The world’s oldest conjoined twins died at the age of 62: here’s their story

Lori and Georges were born on September 18, 1961 in Pennsylvania. George was born as Dori, but as of 2017, he identified as male and explained that he was transgender. The Siamese were joined at the head and shared 30% of their brains, with their two skulls being partially fused. They also shared vital blood vessels. In view of this diagnosis, the doctors did not give the two little beings more than 30 years to live. They finally defied all predictions, becoming in 2015 the oldest Siamese twins in the world, surpassing at that time Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyapova, who died at 53.

Although Siamese, Lori and George were quite different. As the Guinness Book explains, Lori could walk, while George could not. He moved in a wheelchair pushed by his sister, who also carried him when he had to go up or down stairs, for example.

They lived in a two-bedroom apartment in Pennsylvania, where they alternated, one night after the other, between Lori’s bed and George’s. They tried to live as independently as possible from each other, and when one of them wanted to take time for their hobbies, the other went “on stand-by”. Passionate about music, George was a country singer and this led the Siamese to travel to several countries around the world for George’s concerts.

In a report published in 1997, Lori and George said they did not want to live apart, if it had been possible to operate on them. “Why fix what’s not broken?” George asked tenderly in front of the camera, confirming that he “absolutely didn’t” want to be separated from his sister. His wish will have been granted, and for longer than anyone imagined.
