The world’s largest offshore wind farm, Hornsea 2, produced the first electricity

The end of this year brought another important milestone for wind energy. The Danish company Orsted has announced that the wind farm Hornsea 2 it produced the first electricity off the coast of Great Britain. This currently the largest offshore wind farm in the world should be in full operation within the next year. The farm will generate enough electricity to cover the consumption of more than 1.3 million British households.

Hornsea 2 wind farm with a total output of 1.32 GW is located in the sea 89 kilometers from the east coast of Great Britain. It consists of 165 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, with an output of 8 MW. It connects to the British electricity grid at Killingholme in Lincolnshire.

Hornsea Wind Farms

The record wind farm grew relatively fast. Project Hornsea 2 was approved only in 2016. Follows the wind farm Hornsea 1, which began commercial operations in 2020 as the world’s largest offshore wind farm. Hornsea 1 has 174 turbines with a total output of 1.2 GW and supplies electricity to more than a million British households.

TIP: Large wind farms in the North Atlantic would be enough for the whole Earth

At the same time, it is clear that the record for Hornsea 2 Farm will not last long. Preparations are currently underway to build a wind farm Hornsea 3, which will generate electricity for more than two million British households. Another wind farm is in the planning phase Hornsea 4.
