PHNOM PENH, KOMPAS.com – A fisherman in Mekong River from Cambodia has caught the largest freshwater fish ever recorded, scientists say.
The fish that was caught was Stingray weighing 300 kg.
Stingray The freshwater giant measuring 4 meters (13 feet) from snout to tail was captured last week and released back into the wild after being tagged to track its behavior.

The stingray find beats the previous record for the largest fish catch for the 293 kilogram (646 lb) Mekong giant catfish caught in Thailand in 2005, according to a research project. Wonders of the Mekong US-funded.
The stingray caught in Stung Treng province in northern Cambodia is more than twice the average weight of a lowland gorilla, according to experts.
“In 20 years of researching giant fish in rivers and lakes on six continents, this is the largest freshwater fish we have encountered or have documented anywhere in the world,” said Zeb Hogan, fish biologist who led the project. “This is a truly astonishing discovery, and justifies efforts to better understand the mysteries surrounding this species and the incredible stretch of rivers it lives in,” he added.
The researchers installed acoustic tag to the stingray before returning it to the river, to try to learn more about the behavior of the elusive secret creature.

Last month, an endangered giant freshwater stingray four meters long and weighing 180 kilograms was also caught by a fisherman in the same province.
More than 1,000 species of fish call the Mekong River home and stingrays aren’t the only giants lurking in the muddy waters.
