Although steam engines are often seen as archaic, coming from a bygone era, the problem with these engines was the type of fuel used to produce the steam, while steam propulsion itself is exceptionally efficient. Because of this, many of us will be impressed to learn that the motorcycle that holds the world record for acceleration and speed achieved over a distance of a quarter of a mile has a steam engine! The motorcycle was built by the Frenchman Eric Tebloul and managed to score numbers that even the fastest cars can only dream of.

Last year, Eric Taboul broke his own record twice in one weekend, at an event dedicated to speed and enthusiasts of motorcycles and fast cars. His motorcycle, with a custom-made frame, very elongated to guarantee stability at lightning acceleration, managed to cover the distance of 1/4 mile, or 402 meters, in only 4.976 seconds! The fastest cars barely come close to 8.5 seconds.

What’s more, the bike’s finishing speed was 290.51 miles per hour, which equates to 467.5 km/h! This figure would also be impressive as a maximum speed, but here we are talking about the speed that the motorcycle already had after less than 5 seconds from the start! So, what insane engine does this motorcycle have to achieve such a performance?

Well, it’s an engine that uses hydrogen peroxide as fuel, in its liquid form, but compressed to a pressure that disperses it into steam and oxygen, at 1,200 degrees Celsius. At that immense pressure, the steam is released and propels the motorcycle forward with rocket acceleration.

Recently, a British motorcyclist, on a motorcycle called Force of Nature, tried to break his record, but managed to go faster in the 1/8 mile distance, reaching it in 3.878 seconds, but not in the distance of 402 meters, due to the lower maximum speed.

So the British secured only a niche record, while the most coveted record, at 402 meters, still belongs to the Frenchman Eric Teboul and his motorcycle.
