The amount of wolf hunting has been determined on the basis of the Hunting Law, “Hunting Regulations” and the methodology of the Ministry of Agriculture for assessing the condition of game populations and determining the permissible amount of hunting.

The SFS informed that during this hunting season the service has established a new procedure for operative reporting of hunted wolves – before moving the wolf from the place where it was hunted, the wolf’s teeth must be photographed. Photo file information should include hunting date and GPS coordinates.

An act of hunting the animal must be completed before the hunted wolf is moved. In collective hunting this act is filled in by the hunting manager, but in individual hunting – by the hunter himself. The following days must be reported to the SFS within the next working day by sending a photograph of the wolf’s teeth and information on the sex and age of the animal, as well as the telephone number and hunter’s license number of the hunter concerned.

Within a month after the wolf has been hunted, the hunter must obtain the necessary documentation on the wolf’s acquisition from the SFS. During the completion of the documentation, the hunter will also have to submit to the SFS the appendix “Hunting load and wolf population trends”, which is necessary for the collection of large carnivore monitoring data.

If a female wolf is older than a year, it must be kept until the samples are handed over to LVMI “Silava” for special wolf monitoring. Information about the hunted female wolf together with the hunter’s contact information is sent to the SFS by LVMI “Silava”, whose representative then contacts the hunter. When taking samples, a representative of “Silava” shall make a note to that effect in the act of hunting a wolf or lynx or send this information to the SFS. If samples from another hunted wolf are needed, a “Silava” representative will contact the hunter.

Wolves will be allowed to be hunted from 15 July until the set hunting volume is reached, but no longer than 31 March 2021.

It has already been reported that the previous 2019/2020. 280 wolves were allowed to be hunted during the wolf hunting season.
