The NBA denied a request from the Canadian on Friday Andrew Wiggins to obtain an exemption from the covid-19 vaccine for religious reasons, so the forward will not be able to play the home matches of the Golden State Warriors until meeting this requirement.
In a statement, the American Basketball League said that the refusal of Wiggins to get vaccinated is a violation of protocols of the health department of the city of San Francisco (California).
Local authorities demand a complete vaccination of all the people who attend large events indoors.
Wiggins, 26, had requested an exemption from the rule for religious motives, a request that was rejected by the NBA.
“The NBA has reviewed and denied Andrew Wiggins’ request of a religious exemption for the order of the Department of Public Health of San Francisco that demands the vaccination against covid-19 to all participants aged 12 and over in the large indoor events, “said the NBA in a brief statement.
“Wiggins will not be able to play in Warriors games at home until it complies with the vaccination requirements of the city, “he concluded.
The forward, second highest scorer in the franchise last season with 18.6 points after the star Stephen Curry (32,0), is one of the players of the NBA high-profile who has publicly maintained that he will not be vaccinated.
“To each his own. Whoever wants to get vaccinated, do it; who does not want to do it, do not do it“, said Wiggins in March. “Right now, I am not going to wear it, but it is not a criticism of anyone who wears it. I make my own decisions. But right now, I have decided not to take it.”
The first regular season game of the Warriors on his court will be before Los Angeles Clippers October 21.
