The entire population is likely to be infected with COVID-19 sometime. This is the warning issued by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products.
Agustín Portela, head of the Biotechnology Service of the Spanish Medicines Agency, has assured in a conference at the Royal Academy of Sciences that it is most likely that “all of us, even if we are vaccinated, become infected and pass the disease at home, from mild form, such as a cold or pharyngitis. ” And it is that, he has pointed out, the vaccine does not prevent contagion only the development of severe symptoms.
In addition, number two of the AEMPS has warned that “we are not going to end coronavirus mortality in older people, even if they have the complete pattern. “In this sense, he explained that it is not because the serum against the coronavirus does not work, but because our elders have previous pathologies that are aggravated when they are infected.
Thus, it has recommended that there be an annual booster of the vaccine because “We are seeing that with the third dose there is an increase in antibodies”. “People with many pathologies and older people will have to inoculate successive doses so that they have a high level of antibodies and mucous membranes,” he pointed out in this regard.
Precisely, Pedro Sánchez announced this Thursday that the population between 60 and 69 years old and health and social health workers will receive the third dose. Something that is already being done with those over 70, the elderly living in residence, the immunosuppressed and those who received the Janssen single-dose vaccine.
Until now, 89% of the target population has received the complete guideline, which represents 37,487,685 people. Figures that make Spain one of the countries with the highest vaccination rate and with the lowest infection rate in recent weeks.
