The war in Ukraine – WSJ: Suspected Abramovich poisoning

The Russian oligarch, as well as Ukrainian peace negotiators, are said to have suffered from symptoms of suspected poisoning following peace talks in Kyiv earlier this month. They have later recovered, and their lives are not in danger, the newspaper writes.

It writes major newspapers The Wall Street Journalwhich refers to the journalist collective Bellingcat, in addition to unnamed sources.

It has previously been reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj has asked Russian Abramovich to participate in the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. according to Financial Times it was Putin himself who from the Russian side agreed that Abramovich should be allowed to participate in the peace negotiations.

Must have developed symptoms

Abramovich is known as the owner of the football club Chelsea. After the war in Ukraine broke out, and the oligarch had his funds frozen in Britain, he has announced that he will sell the club.

After a meeting in it Ukrainian the capital, Abramovich, along with at least two senior members of the Ukrainian delegation allegedly developed the following symptoms:

  • red eyes
  • constant and painful tearing
  • peeling of the skin on the face and on the hands

Zelensky – who according to the newspaper met Abramovich during the trial – should not have been hit. A spokesman for Zelenskyj told The Wall Street Journal that he had no knowledge of a suspected poisoning.

Western experts who have looked at the symptoms have reportedly concluded that it is difficult to determine whether the symptoms are due to a chemical or biological poison, or a form of radiation attack.

The GuardianJournalist Shaun Walker quotes an unnamed source saying that Abramovich “lost his sight for several hours” and that he received medical treatment in Turkey.

Over the years, Abramovich has had strong ties to the Kremlin. according to BBC there was a close collaboration with then-president Boris Yeltsin when he bought the oil company Sibneft from the Russian authorities in 1995. 10 years later he sold the company back to the authorities with huge profits.

Close ties with Vladimir Putin have also been reported. The two have been pictured together on several occasions, but the relationship has never been commented on publicly.

In the book “Putin’s People” by journalist Catherine Belton, it was claimed that he bought Chelsea on order from Putin. Abramovich filed a defamation suit against the publisher and the journalist to have the allegations removed from later editions – and won with this.
