The ‘VW ID.3’ eco-marathon runs 531 km – 111 km more than the manufacturer promises

ElectricVolkswagen ID.3 ”has been able to drive 531 kilometers without recharging – 111 kilometers more than the reach of this model after the WLTP cycle specified by the car manufacturer. The journey, which demonstrates the energy efficiency of VW’s new hatchback, took place from the German city of Zwickau, where the ID.3 model is produced, to the Swiss city of Schaffhausen.

This eco-marathon used a version of the VW ID.3 1st Pro Performance, which is equipped with a medium-capacity (58 kWh) battery and a 204-horsepower electric motor for this model. About 44 percent of the road electric cars drove on highways, and the remaining 56 percent – on suburban roads. In total, nine hours were spent on the road and the average speed was 56 km / h.

The car was piloted by Felix Egolf, who is a regular set of eco-marathon records. He managed to achieve such good driving economy parameters, because the accelerator pedal is used for acceleration only when necessary and basically allowing the electric car to roll at idle, while on the highways a leeward was used when driving behind trucks.

In addition, Egolfs was not alone in the trip, the car had an additional weight of 250 kilograms – a video operator with specialized technical equipment for filming. For extra savings, Egolfs switched on the car’s interior ventilation and audio system only when needed. In turn, the dipped beam was switched on during the whole trip.

As a result, the average consumption of the trip was 10.9 kWh per 100 km, which is much less than the 14.5-15.4 kWh per 100 km specified by the car manufacturer.

The VW ID.3 was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September. 100% electric “ID.3” is available with 150 or 204 hp electric motor, as well as a set of batteries with 45, 58 or 77 kWh energy capacity. Depending on the selected battery, the “ID.3” range, according to the manufacturer’s data (WLTP cycle), is 330, 420 and 550 km, respectively.

VW ID.3 will go on sale in Latvia this autumn and will cost from 40,915 euros.
