The video game by Czech filmmakers deals with deportation and collectivization

According to Ondřej Trhoň from the Charles Games studio, the new game is a combination of adventure, interactive conversations with actors and memories of people who experienced chaos after the end of World War II.

“Freedom 1945: Liberation is the first game in which the theme of expulsion and collectivization appears. It shows unique stories from a key period in Czech history. We want to offer a unique look at the times and events that are still moving the Czech public debate. We don’t tell players what to think, but we offer different perspectives, “said chief game designer Vít Šisler.

In the game, a player arrives in the small village of Svoboda on the Czech-German border to settle a long-standing dispute. However, he soon finds out that the roots of the seemingly banal case go back to the end of World War II and the onset of communism. During the investigation, he discovers a photograph of his grandfather.

It’s up to him to put his story together. In Freedom 1945: Liberation, he interrogates those who saw the horrors of war with their own eyes – elaborate conversations await him, in which every choice matters. He has to deal with how to talk to someone who has lost a friend on the battlefield, or how to return to their birthplace for the first time since they were deported as a child.

“We are making full use of the potential of video games, for example, in the section on collectivization, in which the player must maintain his farm for as long as possible, despite increasing pressure to join the team. Mandatory levies, nationalization, we will let you experience it all for yourself, ”added Lukáš Kolek, director of the Charles Games studio.

In the stories of the characters of Svoboda 1945, the player also encounters the Dukel-Carpathian operation or the Prague uprising. The key issue is dealing with the past, both national and family.

Svoboda 1945: Liberation is a loose continuation of the previous title Charles Games Attentat 1942, which won a number of domestic and foreign awards, including the Czech Game of 2017, the German A MAZE Award or appeared in nominations for the Apple Design Award and Independent Games Festival in San Francisco. Both plays were created in collaboration with historians from the Institute of Contemporary History of the ASCR.

The title Svoboda 1945: Liberation is offered on Steam for Baťa’s 13.99 euros, ie about 360 CZK.
