The USA’s Role as Global Policeman: Challenges and Limitations

20:30, 12 February 2024

“The USA is still the only policeman in the world who is able and willing to intervene in conflicts in remote regions. Most of the other powers are local,” says Māris Andžāns, director of the Center for Geopolitics Research, in his opinion on the “Globuss” program.

The presenter of the program, Ansis Bogustovs, figuratively asks, does this only policeman have stacks and can he use them in all places at the same time? “If there will be flames in the Middle East, then the conflict in Ukraine does not sound like it will be frozen,” says Bogustov.

“The Ukrainians, in fact, are already physically short of bullets. Every minute delayed, every charge that is delivered faster to the Middle East than to Ukraine is, in principle, Russia’s small victory.”

“I think that every time a new war started in the Kremlin, they raised their spirits and cried.

Whether it’s in Gaza, Yemen, or anywhere else the US’s attention is drawn. I think there is no need to doubt that,” Anjan believes.

He says that it is definitely not easy for the USA: “The USA itself has internal political problems. The election is coming. Then different issues come to light, different discussions, the same border crisis, issues about same-sex relationships, abortions, permits to carry firearms and much more. And then comes foreign policy. Americans will vote normally, looking at the things that are happening inside, not outside.”

The “Globuss” project is financed by the Media Support Fund from the funds of the Latvian state budget. AS “TV Latvija” is responsible for the content of the program “Globuss”. #SIF_MAF2024
