WASHINGTON, Dec.6 (Reuters) – The administration of US President Joe Biden is expected to announce a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics this week, which will take place next February, CNN television reported on Sunday.
Joe Biden said last month that he was considering sending no high-ranking delegations to China for the event due to the human rights situation in the country, including what the United States denounces as the genocide of the Muslim Uyghur community in the Xinjiang region.
The US administration is facing pressure from activists and Congress to refrain from sending a diplomatic delegation to China.
The White House declined to comment.
Reuters has previously learned from four sources that the boycott hypothesis is favored by a growing number of White House officials.
CNN said on Sunday that this decision would not prevent American athletes from taking part in the Beijing Olympics.
