The US will announce new sanctions against Russia in the next few weeks, James O’Brien, coordinator of US State Department sanctions issues, told Ukrainian officials.
The Office of the President of Ukraine informed that in a video conference with O’Brien, they discussed the strengthening of sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities that continue to support aggression against Ukraine.
“O’Brien said that a State Department task force of about 30 members is analyzing in detail all materials submitted by the Ukrainian government and [Ukrainas prezidenta biroja vadītāja Andrija] Jermaka un [bijušā ASV vēstnieka Krievijā Maikla] A group led by McFaul. As he said, work on several important directions is currently being completed and an announcement on new sanctions is expected in the near future,” the office of the President of Ukraine said.
O’Brien explained that the main considerations in deciding who to target are how the restrictions will affect Russia’s capabilities on the battlefield and the country’s finances. Also, an important factor is whether a person has committed crimes against Ukrainian civilians, including children, or is related to the annexation of Ukrainian territories, has propagated about it.
Yermak has offered to organize a summit on sanctions in the coming months, in which the US and other partners of Ukraine would participate. It could analyze the effectiveness of sanctions so far and coordinate measures to increase the pressure of sanctions. The US representative has expressed his support for holding such a summit.
Anonymous sources have reported that the member states of the European Union want to adopt the tenth package of sanctions against Russia by the summit of Ukraine and the bloc planned in Kyiv at the beginning of February.
