Washington, Mar 21 (EFE) .- The United States reached 29,816,771 confirmed cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus this Sunday and 542,343 deaths from the covid-19 disease, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.
This balance at 8:00 p.m. local time (00:00 GMT on Monday) is 436 more deaths than on Saturday and 35,068 new infections, although the count slows down during the weekends.
California is the state hardest hit by the pandemic with 57,502 deaths, followed by New York (49,426), Texas (47,346), Florida (32,742), Pennsylvania (24,796), New Jersey (24,174) and Illinois (23,357).
Other states with large death toll are Georgia (18,530), Ohio (18,339), Michigan (16,906), Massachusetts (16,867), and Arizona (16,733).
In terms of infections, California has 3,640,703, ahead of Texas with 2,753,758, Florida with 2,008,349, New York with 1,782,769 and Illinois with 1,221,775.
The provisional death toll -542,343- far exceeds the lower limit of the initial estimates of the White House, which in the days of Donald Trump projected in the best of cases between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths due to the pandemic.
US President Joe Biden has predicted that a total of more than 600,000 people in the country will die from the virus.
For its part, the Institute for Health Metrics and Assessments (IHME) of the University of Washington, whose models for predicting the evolution of the pandemic are often set by the White House, estimates that by July 1 they will have lost some 596,000 people.
