the US investigates accidents with autopilot – Corriere.it

That Tesla had some big problem with the on-board “autopilot” is nothing new, confirmed by some accidents including fatalities that have occurred in recent years. Confirmation comes from the American National Highway TrafficSafety Administration (Nhtsa), the regulatory authority for road safety, which has opened 30 investigations into as many accidents involving Tesla vehicles. There have been 10 victims since 2016, with the suspicion that Autopilot, the automatic driving system of the house of Elon Musk, is involved. Already excluded, however, by the Nhtsa in at least three of the 30 cases examined.

At the end of May it had arrived Tesla’s note that warned as one of the car cameras would have been used to check drivers. Specifically, among the notes in the latest update of the car operating system we read: “The camera in the passenger compartment mounted above the interior rearview mirror can now detect if the driver is inattentive while using the Autopilot and warn him ». A move that appears preventive now, in light of the investigations formalized in the United States, even if in fact it concerns only new Tesla models – Model 3 and Model Y – because the previous ones do not have the internal camera.

The inquiries – which in fact focus on possible danger of on-board software for driving aid – are not reserved for the Elon Musk car brand alone. The Nhtsa has opened six more investigations on as many accidents involving automatic assistance systems. Two of these investigations concern branded vehicles Cadillac, two others – for a total of four incidents where no injuries are involved – respectively one Lexus RX450H it’s a Navya Arma. The remaining two involved vehicles Volvo XC90, including Uber Technologies’ self-driving test car it has hit and killed a woman in Arizona in 2018. The measure of the American administration takes place in a climate of national coldness towards the “automatic pilots”: last Wednesday the Senate Trade Committee voted against accelerating the adoption of self-driving cars.
