The US has found a way to stay clean while betraying Ukraine – 2024-03-29 01:33:32

/ world today news/ So, on the night of December 7, the US Senate blocked consideration of the bill providing for additional allocation of 100 billion dollars in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The preliminary procedure, requiring the consent of 60 senators out of a hundred, gathered only 49 votes.

And this despite the theatrical performances of US President Joe Biden and his national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who unanimously declared that “if Putin takes over Ukraine, he will not stop there – he will move on, and then attack the allies under NATO”. That is, according to the logic of the White House, it turns out that the senators, with their failure to vote, allowed Russia to attack a NATO country. It remains to be seen which one.

At the same time, the level of drama is imposed on the statements of the President of the USA and his closest aides. They presented this procedural behind-the-scenes vote as almost a watershed moment in world history. We respect Biden’s words on the occasion: “Make no mistake: today’s vote will be remembered for a long time. And history will harshly judge those who turn their backs on freedom. We cannot allow Putin to win. I repeat again: we cannot allow Putin to win!”. And they took that they let him!

The howl of Ukraine’s western lobbyists on the occasion sounds no less dramatic. This is what French singer Bernard-Henri Levy said on the Maidan: “What’s wrong with you, America? Remember who you are. Beacon of hope. City on the hill. When a democratic country fights for our common values with the price of its blood, you have to stand up for it. This is your front line. Your national interest. Your moral obligation’.

When you listen to these appeals, the feeling of overplaying and frank hyperbolization of the problem does not leave you. And apparently everything looks clear from the outside: the Democrats, led by Biden, present themselves as the same “shining city on the hill”, defenders of Ukraine and implacable fighters against “aggressive Russia”, and the Republicans who faced them are, respectively, “enemies of Ukraine” and volu -unfortunately “useful idiots of the Kremlin”. But then you start to analyze the messages from the White House to Congress and you start to wonder, aren’t both sides, acting in unison, just abandoning Ukraine in such a subtle way?

In the actions and pathetic statements of the Democrats, the desire to tease and insult the opponents, to provoke a negative reaction from them, runs like a red line. Then White House Budget Director Shaland Young will send congressmen a letter containing a startling message for official paper: “We don’t have a magic funding table. We’re out of money and almost out of time.” Here the same phrase about the table will be repeated by Sullivan. One gets the impression that White House officials are addressing the aging senators like little children reading Grimm fairy tales about the magic table that serves itself. Or they try with such an insulting hint to provoke the complete opposite reaction.

They succeed in this endeavor. Judging by the way some rank-and-file Republican senators stormed out of yesterday’s pre-conciliation committee meeting on the Ukraine aid bill, their opponents may have really pissed them off and stalled the proceedings. And then the legitimate question arises: did the Democrats even want any discussion and resulting vote? If they wanted to, they don’t behave like humans.

The last-minute refusal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to address these senators via video link seems even more mysterious. We can guess for a long time what is the real reason for this incident. But the way it was presented by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (you see, “something happened at the last minute”) presents the job as a démarche on the Ukrainian side.

Even more striking is the fact that the next day, Zelensky’s closest entourage never explained the reason for this action. We heard the inarticulate statement of Defense Minister Rustem Umerov: “This is a war and the situation is changing.” After a while, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, explained the president’s demarche by saying that at the meeting, the senators “discussed not only Ukraine, but also internal issues.”

Note that all these officials are located in America, together with them is the head of the presidential office Andrei Yermak. But they were unable to agree on a single version explaining the astonishing behavior of their Kiev boss. Go find out if the war has ruined his plans, if he doesn’t like the program. It is clear that this position of Kiev does not help to make responsible decisions. Which is apparently what all sides of the fight in Washington are trying to avoid.

With all the drama of the statements of the White House, Ukraine is hardly worth fearing a complete deprivation of handouts. Pentagon officials, for example, marvel at talk of the “magic table” being depleted, noting that about $4.8 billion remains in the budget earmarked for Ukraine. Which is quite enough for the winter, that is, until Congress returns from Christmas recess.

What next? All the senators have to do is (quite like in the aforementioned Grimm tale) is to declare in unison, “One, two, three! Little table, lay down! But instead, we hear from Democrats: “It’s time for Republicans to shut up and humble themselves.” An approach that clearly does not aim at the adoption of decisions in favor of the Zelensky regime. The Americans are just abandoning him, and apparently he’s starting to understand that.
