The US begins to apply visa restrictions on charter airlines

The United States has begun to apply visa restrictions to charter airline executives, in response to the “facilitation” of irregular migration to its territory.

According to a statement of the State Department of March 11, 2024, these sanctions arise due to the increase in flights to Nicaragua, which apparently transport a significant number of irregular migrants.

The Assistant Secretary of the Office of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Ambassador Brian Nichols, expressed through Twitter: “USA. The US goes from words to actions. With these measures, the US government seeks to eradicate predatory practices that exploit and benefit from the vulnerability of migrants.”

The visa restriction policy, initially announced in November 2023 and expanded on February 21, 2024, ultimately aims to “protect” vulnerable migrants and “dismantle” networks that profit from their situation.

“The United States continues its commitment to working with governments and the private sector both inside and outside the Western Hemisphere to end these exploitative practices,” the text reads.
