The Unlikely Internet Fame of Grandma Helga: A YouTube Star’s Fairy Tale Reading Journey

Ettlingen – It’s sometimes puzzling which people achieve fame on the Internet with what. This YouTube star is definitely one of them – and yet is so different from the other vloggers and make-up tutorial stars. Grandma Helga Sofie Josefa from Ettlingen in Baden is a proud 86 years old and a hit on YouTube. It has over 190,000 loyal followers “Marmeladenoma” in the meantime. The old lady does something very unambitious in her videos: she reads out loud – old fairy tales.

Grandma sits at the table and reads – without any drama

She sits calmly at a table, opens her huge book of fairy tales and reads, without fanfare, in a calm, warm voice. Every now and then she looks up in the middle of the story, directly into the camera, and comments on the action in her own words. Sometimes she stops when she turns the page. Without losing your calm. Some days she doesn’t need a book at all; she simply tells stories from her own life under the heading “Grandma’s childhood”.

YouTube star makes grandma famous overnight

Grandma Helga certainly didn’t plan for thousands of people to listen to her stories on the Internet. It was her 15-year-old grandson Janik who suddenly started filming his grandmother, whose jam he loved so much. Like many things on the Internet, the popularity came virtually overnight. “Gronkh”, one of the most popular YouTube stars for years, became aware of “Marmeladenoma”. And their platform was suddenly overrun with fans.

Janik now streams a Marmalade Grandma fairy tale stream for all his followers every Saturday evening, with questions and fairy tale requests. There are several small shows on our own YouTube channel. And the two of them are already a bit famous. They have been guests on TV shows and have even received awards, including the 2017 Web Video Prize and an award from the German Center for Fairy Tale Culture.

Despite her success, Grandma hasn’t lost her charm

Since the unexpected success, everything has become a bit more professional, the grandma is a kind of brand, now records video messages and sits a bit more dressed up at her somewhat more organized fairytale reading table. However, she has lost none of her charm. Especially when she talks about her childhood and her siblings, whom she affectionately calls “Hermännle” and “Rösle” in her southern German dialect.

The fact that so many people listened to her simply makes her happy, she enthuses in one of her videos. “Janik and I wanted to bring more color into society. That people talk to each other more again. And revive fairy tales – because they are beautiful and very educational.” She is particularly happy about the handwritten fan mail, which she answers almost every day. She is aware that this is rather unusual for today’s youth. “Some of them have never written a letter before. And some have never heard a fairy tale.”

Men especially love the jam granny

By the way, the enthusiastic listeners don’t exactly correspond to the expected clichés. No prepubescent girls with princess dreams – three quarters of the followers are male and 60 percent are between 18 and 34 years old, reported the southern courier.

It’s not that difficult to guess what makes jam grandma so fascinating. It’s just so wonderfully different from a lot of what attracts the masses. Authentic and present, without pretending or staging. She doesn’t rush, she takes breaks and has a wonderfully decelerating effect on the user audience that would otherwise race through the internet. She talks so warmly and homely, as if you were sitting right next to her on the couch. This is a bit of relaxation in the fidgety of everyday life, like a trip back to your own childhood. And each one begins with the same sentence: “Welcome to the fairytale island. With your jam grandma and grandson Janik…”
