What if our universe has a twin that runs backwards in time? Although it sounds absurd, scientists believe that the existence of such a universe could explain many cosmic mysteries.
The “anti-universe” theory posits that the original universe was small, dense and very hot. The concept of time in this universe was symmetrical. This means uniformity in both backward and forward time.
The universe and its “twin”
The demystification of dark matter, which has long plagued scientists with its obscurity, could finally see the light of day thanks to this theory. That would solve the mystery. If the universe we are a part of really has a twin where time flows backwards, then dark matter is essentially another version of a particle called a “neutrino”. It could then exist only in this twin located in space.
Furthermore, this theory assumes that the universe did not go through a period of “inflation” after the Big Bang. A period that was typical of massive expansion. By chasing gravitational waves or the mass of neutrinos, scientists could thus answer the question of whether this anti-universe really exists.
The solution could thus be found with the help of symmetry, which is omnipresent in the entire universe.
The fundamental symmetry in the universe is called CPT symmetry, where C stands for charge, P for parity, and T for time. Scientists hypothesize that in order to maintain CPT symmetry in the universe, we must have a mirror universe that balances our own.
So if we put both universes on imaginary scales, they too should observe CPT symmetry. This, in layman’s terms, means that there would be an invisible species of it in our universe, capable of influencing ours through gravity… which sounds a lot like dark matter.
However, access to that twin would remain forever denied. The reason is its existence “behind” our big bang, i.e. before the creation of our universe.

We live in an expanding universe. It is full of particles that do a lot of interesting things. Thanks to them, the evolution of the universe moves forward. If we extend the concept of CPT symmetry to our entire universe, the current view of it must change completely.
