The United States will adjust rules for travelers when flying with animals

United States airlines could soon ban the presence of cats, rabbits and all animals other than untrained dogs that passengers try to take with them in the cabin of the plane arguing that they need them for emotional support.

The Department of Transportation announced on Wednesday an adjustment of the rules on animals in flight and where only certain dogs would be exempt.

The airlines say that the number of “emotional support” animals has increased dramatically in recent years and have lobbied for a change in the rules. They have applied their own rules to passengers who present themselves with pigs, pheasants, vipers and other not so common pets.

“This is a wonderful step in the right direction for people like me who depend on a legitimate service of animals that perform a task to mitigate our disability.”said Albert Rizzi, founder of My Blind Spot, which advocates accessibility for people with different skill levels.

The American association that brings together the airlines praised the adjustment of the rules. Industry representatives believe that thousands of passengers cheat the system every year by saying they need the emotional support of a pet. These people avoid paying for the transport of their animals in the cargo area, which costs an average of $ 100 on a one-way flight.

“The airlines want all passengers and crew to have a comfortable and safe flight experience, and we are confident that the proposed standard will help ensure a safer and healthier experience for everyone,” said Nicholas Calio, president of Airlines for America.

Cabin staff also wanted standards for support animals. “I hope that the days of Noah’s Ark by the air are over,” said Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Assistants.

Defending groups of war veterans have taken sides with the airlines. They say that the rise of untrained dogs and other animals in the cabin threatens the possibility of traveling with properly trained dogs. More than 80 veteran and disabled advocacy groups supported the ban on bringing untrained animals into the cabin.

Southwest Airlines transports more than 190,000 “emotional support” animals each year. American Airlines had 155,790 in 2017, an increase of 48% compared to 2016, while the number of pets documented for travel in the cargo area dropped 17%. United Airlines transported 76,000 pets in 2017.

During the next 60 days, US citizens may give their opinion on the proposed changes, which could take effect at any time after that period.
