Washington, Mar 2 (EFE) .- The United States reached 28,717,134 confirmed cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus on Tuesday and 516,456 deaths from the covid-19 disease, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.
The balance at 20.00 local time (01.00 GMT on Wednesday) is 2,136 more deaths than on Monday and 57,900 new infections.
California is now the worst-hit state by the pandemic with 52,693 deaths, followed by New York (47,818), Texas (44,185), Florida (31,135), Pennsylvania (24,062), New Jersey (23,321) and Illinois (22,803).
Other states with a large number of deaths are Georgia (17,480), Ohio (17,346), Michigan (16,544), Massachusetts (16,182) or Arizona (16,060).
In terms of infections, California has 3,576,448, followed by Texas with 2,668,357, third is Florida with 1,918,100, New York is fourth with 1,656,684 and Illinois is fifth with 1,189,326.
The provisional death toll -516,456- far exceeds the lower limit of the initial estimates of the White House, which at the time of Donald Trump projected in the best of cases between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths due to the pandemic.
The new president of the United States, Joe Biden, has predicted that in total more than 600,000 people in the country will die from the virus.
