The Unique Abilities and Characteristics of the Nemertea Worm: Spewing Spiderman-like Webs and More!

Bantentv.com – Worms are animals that are funny to some people. Especially if you see their slimy and slippery shape, it’s no wonder that worms are always avoided. Apart from that, what makes these worms even more disgusting for some people is that there are also other worm species that have unusual abilities or characteristics.

Recently, a video has been circulating on the internet and social media showing a unique worm. Not a few people say that this worm is a type of tapeworm or what is known as Nemertea or its Latin name A very long line. The appearance of this worm is indeed unusual. In the video circulating, when touched, this worm will swell and then spray a white web-like liquid. Many people think that the liquid released by this worm is similar to Spiderman’s webs.

Scientists explain that the white webs that the worms spray occur when the worms detect prey in their surroundings or if they feel threatened. The worm’s circular muscles will automatically detect nearby prey or disturbances until they contract and result in the release of white webs. Even though the liquid looks scary and disgusting, according to researchers at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Oceanography Research Center, the liquid is believed to be non-toxic. The sticky liquid has its own function, namely to drag prey into its mouth.

The longest size of this worm is said to be up to 30 meters if stretched. However, the most frequently encountered ones measure around 20 centimeters on average. In terms of characteristics, Nemerta worms are not much different from tapeworms in general, but there are also some that are different, they have bright colors with a pattern of spots or lines.

Worm Nemerta known to live freely. However, Nemertea is generally found on beaches and in the deep sea. This worm species lives by preying on Dungeness crab eggs in California. (clayrine/ed)
