The Unaffordable, Impracticable, and Ineffective Nitrogen Policy: Urgent Need for Change in the Netherlands

The current nitrogen policy is unaffordable, legally impracticable and does not achieve the desired result

Frans Timmermans gave Caroline van der Plas the assignment to show that it can be done differently. A Job in which our cabinets, 26 other Member States and the European Commission have been failing for 31 years. 81% of European nature reserves are in poor conditionthe dreams of the Habitats Directive (1992) are nowhere to be found. Eurocrats bubbling cheers on, only we are locked.

It is strange that gasless homes have no exception, but temporary containers well. A gasless house push no nitrogen out (except during the build), of emergency housing emit nitrogen during construction and a multiplicity during use. This super-strict interpretation of nitrogen requirements causes more environmental damage than it prevents. Nothing is allowed, not even a step forward.

The government’s current nitrogen plan is seriously inadequate. Then in 2030 (coalition agreement) or 2035 (current law), you are still not allowed to build in 96% of the Netherlands (PDF). Even if you do not implement that plan 100%, but 200%, most provinces will still remain completely locked. Targets have been set that, even in the complete absence of people or livestock in the Netherlands, unfeasible to turn out.

That Frans Timmermans does not ensure that a new stable in Germany, 200 meters from the border, also requires permits in the Netherlands, ensures that we remain locked down, thanks to emissions over which we have no control or influence. We remain powerless and homeless. Foreign deposition is already fatal for us, European direction on cross-border environmental pollution is lacking.

Most nature reserves are going upside down, thanks to purely foreign emissions. Even if you bring all our livestock to slaughter, we are not allowed to build. Other natural areas fertilizer requirementsthere is a most tea card, except in the Netherlands. According to our Dutch rules, we are only allowed to continue living with agriculture, road construction and housing if we achieve our nitrogen targets in all nature.

North Brabant wants per 2024 of the nitrogen lock, by intervening quickly and completely. Unfortunately they miss the right information from the kingdom, legal instruments in sufficient scientific evidence to expropriate or enforce. In a court case, governments must demonstrate a causal link between farmer and nature, the nitrogen model cannot do that. This is not feasible.

The province of Overijssel submitted a nitrogen plan with a price tag of five billion. There are eleven other provinces, some of which have a lot more nitrogen misery, so the budget of 25 billion is even more pathetic than the nitrogen plan itself. The amounts reported by the cabinet are a fraction of the final bill. A usual political lie, because otherwise no one will agree (PDF).

These costly expropriations are extra illogical for anyone who understands how to deal with technical measures profitably reduce nitrogen emissions by 80%, while producing organic fertilizer. It is insane that a farmer uses organic manure not always allowed to drive out, while afterwards with expensive fossil fertilizer with the same ammonia and the same nitrogen CAN be spread.

While the Dutch future and housing is now being held hostage to a non-working nitrogen plan pressing through, sitting similar crises with drought, groundwater levels and water quality already in the pipeline to lock the Netherlands a few more times. We are going from lockdown to lockdown in agriculture, horticulture, housing and road construction. This cannot be paid or carried.

After the nitrogen lock, comes the water lock. There are plenty of nature reserves that not only have a challenge with nitrogen, but also with water quality or drought. According to the RIVM, by 2030 we will be missing such a number 100 million cubic meters of water per year and action must be taken quickly. Two thousand cubic meters per second flows through the Rhine. This shortage flows into the Netherlands every fourteen hours.

If you develop a water shortage in a rainy river delta by the sea, then that is far-reaching incompetence, where a few nomads in the middle of the desert of pissing their pants from it laugh. We literally drown in water zeeout rivers of door extreme precipitation. Plenty of water comes from Germany, we only miss European agreements that it can still be treated for us.

Files like this have been simmering for decades and as they stand now, will remain so for years to come. We are now missing a million homes, with the current population growth immigration that deficit continues to increase. That escalates to ungrateful newcomers on hunger strike and an existing population who postpone family formation. Housing shortage is a peat fire that disrupts our society.

Within the latest version of the Rutte Doctrine, we no longer discuss such controversial topics. Just lift it over the election, into the cover up. Then arise no text messagespolicy documents or minutes which must later be shared with MPs, journalists or other plebs. What never existed is not covered by the WOB, the WOO or article 68.

We can only build again after a political one culture change.
