The British company specializing in vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, hand dryers and air handling wanted to help in the fight against Covid-19 last month. On March 25 to be exact, Dyson therefore committed to manufacturing 15,000 artificial respirators. The British government subsidized 10,000 of them while the company donated 1,000 more in the UK and 4,000 in other countries. Everything seemed to be off to a good start, since even the public health system and the drug and health product regulatory agency both oversaw production. However, the UK has just declared that it simply no longer needs artificial respirators of the brand. Company founder James Dyson said on Friday: ” fortunately they are not necessary, but we do not regret our contribution to the national effort for a moment ” If you remember, the artificial respirator project is called CoVent and it attaches to hospital beds while being powered by batteries. It is mainly used in very severe cases of Covid-19 when the patient can no longer breathe on his own. The United Kingdom had therefore subsidized the manufacture of 10,000 CoVents on condition that they received regulatory approval.
Apparently, the specifications required for CoVent had been changed along the way, which forced Dyson to redesign his respirator. According to our colleagues at The Guardian, the new regulatory approval has taken longer than expected and demand for respirators decreased at the same time. However, the UK said it needed 18,000 artificial respirators to manage the health crisis, but it currently only has 10,800. It is therefore not very clear why CoVent has been abandoned by the country, unless the authorities estimate that the number of cases will soon decrease and therefore they will have enough respirators.

James added that the project cost him around 23 million euros and “I have a little hope that our fan can still provide for other countries, but this will require more time and investigation ” So we don’t know yet if CoVent will be able to be used abroad, but hopefully it will, since many hospitals around the world would need it.
