TG Würzburg II – TV Marktheidenfeld 53:73 (26:38). – After just 15 minutes of play, coach Fabian Barthel’s players cleared things up and were leading by 33:18. “We entered the game very well and, thanks to the high-percentage shots, continued to increase our lead,” Barthel described the course of the game. Maike Herrmann, who had already scored 14 points after 15 minutes, played an important role in this phase.
With Anna Hanzalek and Linn Jürgensen, Würzburg had used two players from the extended second division squad, but also some young players. As a result, the playful class seemed to be lacking from the outset in order to become seriously dangerous to the TVM. Barthel therefore also exploited this fact, making lively substitutions and giving his youth players Elena Ivanov and Vanessa Gorr many minutes of play.
As Würzburg played full-court defense all season, the TVM’s building game repeatedly faltered. “Today I missed the group tactical solution. We achieved success through our individual class, but not through our teamwork,” said Barthel, explaining the reasons why the Würzburg team managed to balance the end of the first half and the third quarter.
In the last quarter, TVM brought the lead to 20 points, thanks to the individual class of Eva Barthel, Margret Pfister and Maike Herrmann.
“It was a must win, nothing more, nothing less. Our young players had to prove themselves against an aggressive defense. Sometimes it worked out better, sometimes worse,” Barthel summed up.
