The TV screen you can taste

The screen can imitate the taste of food, is named “Taste the TV” (TTTV) and is another step in the direction of creating a multisensory viewing experience.

Taste is sprayed from 10 flavor containers, which in various combinations create new taste experiences, according to the news agency Reuters. The taste is rolled out on the screen of hygienic film, so that the viewer can taste what emerges.

Taste the world from the living room

TTTV was developed by the Japanese professor Homei Miyashita, at the University of Meiji. He believes that this type of technology can improve the way people communicate, in what he calls the covid-19 era.

“The goal is to make it possible for people to have an experience of something, like eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even when they are at home,” he said.

Miyashita is in contact with producers about the possibility of adding even more flavors, for a richer dining experience for the viewer. This may mean that the screen can combine different flavors, so that one can, for example, add pizza or chocolate flavors to toast.

According to Miyashita, a commercial version of TTTV will cost around 100,000 yen to produce, which is equivalent to around 7,700 Norwegian kroner.

«Netlicks» and chill

He will also develop a website where users can download flavors from around the world, and compares it to how we listen to music today. Other alternatives for use are learning platforms for chefs, taste games and quizzes.

The professor works with a group of 30 students who have previously produced various flavor products, such as a fork that makes the aroma of the food more intense.

One of the students demonstrated to TTTV at a press conference, where she told the screen that she wanted it to taste sweet chocolate. After a few attempts, a voice repeated the order, and the taste was sprayed on a plastic handkerchief.

– It is in a way like milk chocolate. It’s sweet, like chocolate sauce, she said.
