The warmest New Year’s Eve so far was in 2017 with 14.5 degrees in Arcen in Limburg. “There is a good chance that we will break these heat records this year,” says Damen.

Canary Islands

The warm air is blown from Spain and Portugal to the Netherlands. “We can even divert the wind back to the Canary Islands,” Damen says. This creates a particularly high temperature in the Netherlands. “Certainly also because the sun can break through on January 1. Then you have 15 degrees and sun.”

Unfortunately, the New Year’s Dive in Scheveningen is canceled this year. But for the fanatics who still want to splash into the water on January 1, the ideal weather with a degree of 13 on the coast, says Damen. “The air temperature is simply higher than the sea temperature, which is usually the other way around around this time of year.”

The temperature felt around Christmas was -15 to -16 degrees. Just a few days later, we expect a heat record. A phenomenon that Damen also recognizes: “In recent years, the Netherlands has broken eight times more heat records than cold records,” according to the meteorologist.
