“The Trend of Apology.jpg in Gaming: Daedalic’s The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Falls Flat”

Daedalic Entertainment also committed the trend we call apology.jpg.

In any case, the fact that a game (or its port) comes out in a sloppy form, and then a day or two later, the studio publishes an apologetic statement on Twitter in the form of a picture, casts a particularly pitiful light on the gaming industry. Fallout 76, Battlefield 2042, Cyberpunk 2077, Halo Infinite, Forspoken, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Redfall… and now The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. If you don’t believe, just look at this to list. This can already be called a trend. It’s also ridiculous. Here is the apology.jpg new action translated into Hungarian:

“Dear players. We would like to sincerely apologize for the unsatisfactory experience many have had with The Lord of Rings: Gollum. We acknowledge and deeply regret that the game did not meet the expectations set by us and our dedicated community. Please accept our sincere apologies for any disappointment this may have caused. As a studio and passionate fans of The Lord of the Rings, our goal has always been to deliver an engaging and immersive story-driven adventure. The biggest honor (and also the biggest challenge we’ve faced so far) was creating a story set in Middle-earth.

At Daedalic, we understand that the success of a game depends on the enjoyment and satisfaction of the players. We sincerely value your feedback and have actively listened to your voice, read your comments, and analyzed your constructive criticism and suggestions. Our development team is working diligently to resolve the bugs and technical issues that many of you are experiencing. We are committed to providing you with fixes that will allow you to enjoy the game to the fullest. Once again, we deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding during this time. We will continue to keep you updated on progress and provide transparent communication about upcoming fixes and improvements. Your passion and commitment as players has been the driving force behind our determination to make things right. Thank you for your support,” wrote Daedalic, who could have stayed on the receiving end (the German studio is quite good at point-and-click games).

The game has an average rating on OpenCritic 40 out of 100, and with this result, Daedalic put together one of the worst games of the year despite the MULTIPLE delays. But that’s not all: the German government is supporting the studio’s next Lord of the Rings project, currently It’s magic (It’s magic) runs under the name It also has a short description: “Daedalic is working on a new project that will transport the player to a lush world full of mythical creatures and magic. It tells a story from a character’s perspective that has never been told before. The player discovers new regions and influences the events of the world within the framework of his role and abilities. In his own way, he tries to influence the course of things and change the fate of the world. The project is aimed at avid fans of the fantasy story and 3D action-adventure genres worldwide.”

The definition sounds a bit like Gandalf, though who knows. The definition does not mention Tolkien’s work, but the image itself is under a large Lord of the Rings banner on the German government site. The project runs until August 31, 2024, so it might be released next year… if Daedalic doesn’t cancel it due to the promised huge jacket of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

We wouldn’t be surprised if the Embracer Group, the parent company of Middle-Earth Enterprises, which owns the Lord of the Rings rights, simply took the rights away from Daedalic…
