The Tourism Authority of Thailand works tirelessly to attract Chinese

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) wants to attract travelers from China after the Asian country eased travel restrictions for nine of its southern cities.

ChuwitSirivejkul, TAT’s executive director for East Asia, said the agency is raising awareness among Chinese tourists to lure them to Thailand when their country reopens.

Sirivejkul believes China’s decision to ease travel restrictions in nine southern cities: Beijing, Dalian, Nanjing, Chengdu, Xiamen, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Fuzhou will help Thailand attract Chinese travelers to the country.

Sirivejkuls said many Chinese entrepreneurs and students have been allowed to obtain visas to travel abroad.

Even though flight costs between Thailand and China have increased from 2,000 yuan (283.71 euros) to 40,000-60,000 yuan (5,674-7,092 euros) due to China’s policy of controlling the number of flights a week means Chinese tourists can enjoy an extended stay in Thailand, Sirivejkul said.

He suggested that Chinese tourists could fly to Thailand through Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong, since the airline currently operates regular flights from Hong Kong to Thailand at a cost of 2,000 yuan.

Sirivejkuls said the number of Chinese tourists to Thailand rose to 20,000 in May from 300 per month previously.

The TAT also intends to appeal to elderly tourists who make up 32% of total Chinese visitors to Thailand.
