The time is changing, the weekend will be an hour longer

The change of time was introduced in the then Czechoslovakia in 1979. At first, summer and winter time always lasted six months, but since 1996, summer time lasts seven months and winter time lasts five months. This change was made throughout the European Union, which is why the Czech Republic has joined it.

Originally, the introduction of summer time was justified by saving electricity. But this reason has long since fallen. What more. Energy consumption due to warming is higher in the summer because fans, air conditioners are switched on in offices, and the same is true for shopping malls and households.

Next year, the mandatory change of time throughout the EU was to end. However, the Member States have not yet agreed on what time they want to introduce all year round. No one has prioritized the topic for a long time, and certainly not the current pandemic.

However, experts say that it is clearly best for health to maintain standard winter, ie astronomical time. However, Portugal, Poland and Cyprus, for example, want to keep daylight saving time.

Even in the Czech Republic, according to surveys, most people are against regular time changes and are in favor of its abolition. But even here there is no consensus on what time should be introduced all year round.
Last year, during an informal discussion, the government opted for the introduction of Central European Time, the so-called winter time.

Astronomy knows nothing like that

“Astronomy does not know and does not need a change of time. It is time to cancel it, “said Pavel Suchan, spokesman for the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Doctors are also in favor of finally ending the change of time. “When the time changes, young children have to adapt for several days. Schoolchildren, especially freshmen and sophomores, have problems. It would certainly be positive to have one time throughout the year, “says Dr. Hana Cabrnochová, a general practitioner for children from Prague. He pleads for it to be astronomical time.
