A strawberry grower from East Westphalia makes his discovery public in Edeka – he can only shake his head when he looks at the price of the fruit.

Delbrück – strawberries in December! You really don’t have to be a fruit growing expert to know that this doesn’t quite go together. It’s not the season. This essentially lasts from June to July in Germany, sometimes starting a little earlier or ending a little later. But December is anything but. Now, obviously, all aficionados of the fruit should be treated to it in the middle of winter, if you really don’t want to give up strawberry cake. But it’s something other than the mere existence of the trays in the fresh produce area that makes a strawberry grower Edek– the visit makes you suspicious, as reported by tz.de – and what he shakes his head at on Twitter: The price irritates him: 1.49 euros for 250 grams.

Edeka offers strawberries for six euros a kilo – the local farmer shakes his head

On his Twitter profile, the man describes himself as “an old farmer on a strawberry farm, let’s make the world a little better” – and although this is obviously not confirmed, it is very likely that he is the operator of several strawberries plantations around Delbrück (East Westphalia) with at least eight locations according to the website.

He wrote on December 29: “Today in Edeka, strawberries from Egypt. Almost 6€ per kg. For the price, we can’t offer merchandise harvested during the harvest.” In the first 24 hours or so, it garners about 120 likes and a few replies. “In terms of taste, it probably doesn’t even deserve an award,” says one user. Now the strawberry grower is unlikely to have bought the fruit from Egypt, but he dares to make a prognosis: “No, they don’t taste good either.”

Edeka: Growers are worried about cheap strawberries

Combine that with an anxious look at the coming months: ‘What we are most concerned about is Pentecost, i.e. quite early in 2023, with an early harvest we will have plenty, and if it is then delivered cheaply from all over the world, the local fruit will not be bought”.

In a conversation with colleagues from BW24, Kathrin Walter from the Baden-Württemberg State Association of Commercial Fruit Growers (LVEO) and LVEO President Franz Josef Müller drew attention to the difficult situation in the industry already six months ago. This was preceded by reports of destroyed defense fields due to disastrous prices.

Another user is now supporting the local heritage farmer and his colleagues on Twitter. “That’s a big shame. My favorite place to buy strawberries in the summer is the strawberry stalls that look like strawberries. At least then I know they come from around the corner.” The plantation operator gives a thumbs up: “From the beginning of June we will be one step ahead. Then the harvest in the south will be over. Of course, everyone can make their own purchase decision. But at least the farmer managed to attract the ‘focus on the local industry with the photo of Edeka, and also a little on its plantations. A Kaufland customer was not very happy with her “fresh” purchases.. (line)
