“I have seen with my own eyes how fast China has developed over the past ten years. I am truly amazed and impressed,” Cho Roland Nkwah is fluent in Chinese.

Roland, from Cameroon, is a professor at Binzhou University in Binzhou, east China’s Shandong Province. 17 years ago, he came to China because of his love for Chinese kung fu.

During Roland’s second year in China, his wife Victorine was also invited to Binzhou to teach English. “We are very happy to live in a warm city like Binzhou and I like spending time with my students,” she said.

During the years they have lived in China, one of the things that has struck this Cameroonian couple the most is the changes made by the country.

“Economic growth, as well as social, political, urban, cultural and other developments are changing day by day,” says Roland. “For example, if you visit a city and go back a year later, you will see that everything has changed.”

Due to their excellent teaching and research abilities, they took on a number of key teaching duties at the university, including a flight school English course, thus providing a good linguistic foundation for students who continue their studies in foreign flight schools.

“We have two English lessons a week with foreign teachers, the lessons are very lively and interesting. Our teachers are very patient with us and very eager to help us with our questions,” recalls a first-year student from the ‘school.

“You could say that the establishment of the flight school is the reason why I stayed here in Binzhou,” says Roland. “It was established about a year after I came to work here. I’m really happy to see it gradually grow and be a part of it.”

Talking about their love for China and Binzhou, they couldn’t help but share. “Although we encountered a lot of differences in culture and customs at the beginning, we really like Chinese culture. And we often tell our families and friends stories about our stay here,” says Victorine.

In April this year, Roland also volunteered for epidemic prevention and control, reminding people in the neighborhood to take nucleic acid tests. “The epidemic is strictly controlled. The Chinese government has implemented a series of effective measures,” he reaffirms, “so I wanted to do something too”.

In addition, they actively participate in university activities such as teaching in less-developed areas, and they have joined the Binzhou Foreign Nationals Friendship Association, thus making an important contribution to social development and exchanges. local education and culture.

Their son, whose name is Enlai, was born and raised here. For this family, Binzhou has become their second home. And this city will also continue to bear witness to their history with China.
