The start of the semester at Volkshochschule Wittenberg has been delayed

Wittenberg/MZ – A year ago it was the lockdown, this time it’s Omikron and the protection of the critical infrastructure. The Lindenfeld Education Center in Wittenberg is closed to the public, this applies in particular to the music and adult education centers. Instrumental lessons and courses therefore have to be canceled or take place online. This rule applies until the end of January, initially.

It is about keeping the administrative district functional when things get tight, explains Thomas Sagner, director of the district adult education center. That is understandable and still not nice. “It affects 76 courses and around 700 participants that we all have to notify,” he calculates. Because actually the spring semester of the adult education center should start these days – with the first courses from this week.

Hope for the beginning of February

The start of the semester has to be postponed, once again. Sagner and his team are now hoping for the beginning of February. It is not certain. It depends on how the pandemic develops. The director therefore asks those who have already registered to take a look at the website of the educational institution more often, there will be informed about the current situation. However, participants will also be informed by email or telephone if it is clear when to continue.

The events that cannot take place in January – health courses in particular are affected – should not be canceled, says Sagner. They will be postponed to the summer: “We have had practice with it.” He admits that rescheduling is not that easy, for example because the number of rooms is limited. He also says that the instructors respond with understanding.

Apart from the delayed start, the spring semester of the district adult education center in Wittenberg has long been prepared. There are 253 courses on offer, which are presented as usual in the program brochure or on the website. The program booklet is printed in a print run of 5,000 and has already been distributed – for example to bookstores, Sparkasse branches, citizens’ offices or medical practices. It was slightly redesigned, given a larger font and made more clear. Some courses are already well booked, others have not yet been registered. You can do this online or by using the card in the booklet.

Proven and new in the program

As always, there are tried and tested offers alongside new ones. The vocational and basic education department, for example, for which Irka Schmidt is responsible, comprises 58 courses and 760 teaching hours. It’s about the tax return as well as the operation of a computer. The resumed offers in terms of educational leave are now being continued with two offers: further training to become a children’s yoga teacher and resilience in the workplace.

The so-called literacy courses for people with insufficient knowledge of reading, arithmetic and writing will not only be continued but expanded. “There is not enough capacity. We always have questions, ”explains the department head. It was possible to bring a third course to life – and to win another lecturer. Almost 30 registrations have already been made, says Schmidt.

According to Birgit Präger, the program in the health and culture department has a total of 79 courses, including 21 of the popular prevention courses that are funded by health insurances. It also points out various news. For example at weekend dance workshops: salsa and discofox. If you want, you can also try three-dimensional felting or acrylic painting, the course is led by a woman,

Easter eggs according to the Sorbian tradition

who previously taught at an art school in Saint Petersburg, Russia and can refer to exhibitions in numerous countries. There are still places available, says Präger, who is also promoting a course in which the decorating of Easter eggs according to Sorbian tradition is practiced – led by a former math teacher.

That leaves the area of languages and society, which offers, among other things, “Education for Sustainable Development” – with tips on ecological and energy-efficient building or solar energy on your own roof. The offerings also include a mother-daughter course under the motto “time for two”.
