The SRS has not detected any attempts to circumvent sanctions in Ventspils port terminals / Diena

In response to public statements about the possible circumvention of sanctions against Russia, the SRS has carried out an inspection by mixing fuel imported from Russia with fuel from another country at one of the terminals operating in the port of Ventspils.

The SRS pointed out that the European Union has not imposed any sanctions on Russian fuel at the moment, but at the same time the inspection has established that diesel fuel was imported from the ports of Finland, Sweden and Russia to Ventspils port from 1 January to 22 March.

During the same period, one ship with fuel loaded at one of the terminals of the Port of Ventspils went to the USA, indicating in the documents that this fuel has the status of non-EU goods.

The SRS is actively working to prevent any attempt to circumvent the European Union sanctions imposed on Russia or Belarus in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The SRS also reminded that after April 16, 2022, it will be prohibited to provide access to ports in the territory of the European Union for any vessel registered with the Russian flag.

All three terminals engaged in transshipment of oil products in the port of Ventspils – JSC “Ventbunkers”, SIA “Ventall termināls” and SIA “Ventspils nafta termināls” already on Wednesday denied to LETA that they would have mixed Russian diesel fuel with a product of another origin.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that European energy companies were looking for a way around maintaining Russia’s crude oil flow, while publicly renouncing cooperation with Russia. The “Latvian mixture” has appeared on the oil market – diesel fuel, which looks like a solution to supply a Russian product mixed with a product of another origin. Ventspils was mentioned in the Bloomberg publication as a place where mixing takes place.
