JAKARTA – Peak Perseid meteor shower took place on Saturday night and early Sunday morning. This extraordinary phenomenon can be seen with the naked eye (although it is better to use tools such as binoculars). Unfortunately, the sky is clear and there is not much air pollution.

Phenomenon Perseid meteor shower itself occurred at 00.14-05.36 WIB. Although, in some places this phenomenon can last for 16 hours.

At the peak moment, there will be 100 meteors per hour that can be seen. The Perseid meteor shower originates from a comet named 109P/Comet Swift-Tuttle. The comet orbits the Sun once every 133 years.

The Most Spectacular Meteor Shower

The Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the most spectacular meteor showers that occurs every year in August. This phenomenon occurs when the Earth crosses a trail of particles and dust left by the comet Swift-Tuttle as it circles the Sun.

This meteor shower is called “Perseid” for it seems that the radian, that is, the point in the sky from which these meteors appear to come from, is near the constellation Perseus.

So, here are the facts about the Perseid meteor shower:

1. Cause

The Perseid Meteor Shower occurs when Earth crosses the orbit of comet Swift-Tuttle. When Earth traverses the trail of particles and dust left by this comet, the particles enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speed. When these particles collide with atmospheric molecules, they heat up and produce light that is seen as the flash of meteors across the sky.

2. Best Date and Time for Viewing

The Perseid Meteor Shower usually peaks in mid to late August, with peak activity on the night of August 11-13. At this time, you can usually see up to tens to hundreds of meteors per hour in dark skies and away from city lights.
