The Spanish passport became one of the most powerful in the world in 2024

According to a quarterly classification prepared by the consulting firm Henley & Partners, which compares the visa-free access of 199 different passports to 227 travel destinations, the Spanish passport became one of the most powerful in the world in 2024, as it allows access to 194 of these destinations.

The passport of the Iberian country shares the first place on this list with those of Singapore, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

In the previous ranking, made at the end of 2023, the passport of Germany, Italy and Spain were in second place, rising one place in the ranking this January. For their part, France and Japan rose two, as they were in third place.

Now, in the current second place there is a three-way tie between the passports of South Korea, Finland and Sweden, which allow visa-free entry to 193 different destinations. Third place in 2024 is occupied by documents from Austria, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands, which have access to 192 countries without the need for a visa.

The consultancy placed the passports of Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal and the United Kingdom in fourth place, with 191 destinations available, while fifth place is shared by Greece, Malta, Belgium and Switzerland, with 190 destinations available to their citizens.

As for the United States passport, it ranks seventh along with Canada and Hungary, which can visit 188 countries without a visa.

On the other hand, very different, Cuba’s passport is ranked number 78, as it only allows visa-free access to 64 countries.

Despite the sad figures, the Cuban passport is not the worst in the world, although it is undoubtedly close enough, since that title belongs to the documents of Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, which allow entry only to 28, 29 and 31 countries.

The Henley & Partner Passport Index has been running for 19 years, and is a simple way to understand the power of documents from different countries. To carry out these studies, they rely on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
