The ski mountaineer from Bolzano who fell during an excursion on the Catinaccio died

The 60-year-old ski mountaineer from Bolzano who slipped 200 meters yesterday during an excursion on the Catinaccio died in Trento hospital. Laura Ghirardini, This is the name of the victim, an Inail official from Bolzano, she was on a trip with her husband and some friends. The accident occurred at approximately 2,700 meters above sea level. The woman was recovered in serious condition by the air ambulance and transported to Trento, where however she died this morning. The victim was passionate about ski mountaineering and mountaineering.

The dynamics of the accident

From an initial reconstruction, it seems that the woman was proceeding uphill towards the summit together with three hiking companions, when at an altitude of around 2,700 meters she slipped and fell for over 200 meters along a slope of snow mixed with rock, on the western side. The call to the single emergency number came from other ski mountaineers in the area who witnessed the accident. The single emergency center requested the intervention of the helicopter, while the operators of the Centro Fassa Alpine and Speleological Rescue station made themselves available in the Pozza di Fassa area.

Transport by helicopter

The helicopter rose to altitude and, after a brief reconnaissance from above, identified the ski mountaineer with one of her hiking companions who, in the meantime, had managed to reach her. The air rescue technician and the medical team were disembarked on site with the winch, finding her unconscious. While with a second rotation the helicopter transported two operators from the Centro Fassa station to high altitude to assist the woman’s companions, the helicopter crew stabilized the ski mountaineer. Once recovered on board with the winch, she was urgently transferred to the Santa Chiara hospital in Trento, unconscious and suffering from multiple traumas. The companions were accompanied downstream by operators from Centro Fassa. Due to a worsening of the weather, the helicopter was unable to fly at high altitude to recover the mountain rescue helicopter rescue technician who therefore descended on foot to the Vajolet refuge, and was then taken to the valley with the quad.
