“The situation is unworthy of a civilized country”, the distress of the caregivers of the CHU Grenoble Alpes

While the summer promises to be tense in many departments, hospital staff have planned to demonstrate on Tuesday June 7 in front of the emergency room of the Grenoble University Hospital, the nerve center of the hospital crisis in Isère. They demand the establishment of a moratorium on the closure of beds.

More and more of them are explaining that their working conditions clash with their ethics on a daily basis. Shortage of staff, influx of patients linked to bed closures, almost everywhere, hospital staff say they are exhausted. A discomfort that crystallizes in the emergency room.

At the CHU Grenoble Alpes, a doctor who prefers to remain anonymous describes a critical situation: “We are 29 full-time for 52 positions needed for emergencies and Samu. It is common to receive a hundred patients at night with only 3 doctors on call. In these conditions, many of us prefer to leave the hospital. In the month of May alone, 15 of our colleagues resigned”.

I’ve seen people die in the hallways before we’ve even been able to take care of them.

Those who leave precisely, dare to tell the worst.I saw some people, often elderly, die in the corridors before we have even been able to take care of them. The situation is totally unworthy of a civilized country of the 21st century. We are not fighting for ourselves. It is no longer a financial problem, it is a problem of humanity. This summer, people will lose their loved ones because some care cannot be provided, for example for a stroke. says this doctor left for other functions.

And the situation is just as worrying in the other hospitals in the department. Barely inaugurated, that of Voiron must for example close its emergencies on the nights of Friday to Sunday for lack of carers in sufficient number. It is the hospital of Bourgoin-Jallieu, also in tension, which must assume the load of additional activity. Ditto in La Mure which in May had to display closed doors for a day or in Vienna where the Lucien Hussel hospital is also faced with a lack of medical personnel.

Some patients remain stuck in the emergency room for more than 5 days, without any privacy or appropriate follow-up

Ambre, young nurse at the Grenoble University Hospital

“The emergencies at the Grenoble University Hospital have become the nerve center of all these dysfunctions” sums up Ambre, a young nurse who “to breathe” just took a one-year availability. Imagine, she explains, cs in many departments, there are not enough beds to accommodate patients, some are sometimes stuck in the emergency room for more than five days, without any privacy or appropriate follow-up to their cases. We have a capacity of 55 places but we welcome double the number of people day and night. All this creates among the nurses and nursing assistants a permanent anxiety, a constant fear of error“.

Given the chronic difficulty in establishing the staff schedule, this summer, some of its caregivers expect to be requisitioned.I don’t see how it can happen otherwise confides one of them. It’s unfortunate, it’s going to push more people out,” does he regret.

Leaving, settling as a liberal or simply changing jobs, each year more and more of them are turning their backs on the hospital. After the health crisis, the Ségur de la santé will therefore not have given the new breath expected by these professions. The discomfort even seems a little greater every day.
