“I’m always full of hope, but I have to be honest, the situation is difficult right now,” Johnson told reporters in London. “Our friends must realize that Britain has left the EU for democratic control. We are still a long way from each other,” said the British prime minister, who is due to meet with European Commission President Urzula von der Leien this week. “At the moment, it looks very complicated. We will do what we can. I tell everyone that our country has great opportunities,” the prime minister added.
The transition period after Britain’s withdrawal from the EU ends on 31 December, and there is very little time left to reach an agreement on the future relationship between the parties, as both sides have yet to ratify it. If the agreement is not concluded and ratified by 31 December, customs tariffs will come into force between the EU and the UK, and companies on both sides will suffer, but especially in the UK.
Johnson and Leiena had a telephone conversation on Monday, and Johnson was invited to face-to-face talks in Brussels. The two leaders pointed out that there were still significant disagreements over fisheries, fair competition and the management of the agreement, and that the necessary conditions for concluding the agreement had not yet been provided. “We asked our key negotiators and their teams to report on the remaining differences to discuss during their meeting in Brussels,” the two politicians said in a joint statement.
