The singer Idir died at the age of 70 on Saturday May 2. The cause of death of the Kabyle song star has been revealed.
Kabylia mourns one of its stars … The singer Idir, known for his song in the Berber language, Vava Inouva, died at the age of 70 on Saturday May 2. His family announced this sad news on the artist’s Facebook account, leaving his millions of fans around the world orphaned. “We regret to announce the death of our father [à tous], Idir, Saturday, May 2 at 9:30 p.m. Rest in peace, dad“wrote his children with emotion. Idir, real name Hamid Cheriet, had been hospitalized the day before at Bichat hospital in Paris. He succumbed to lung disease according to his entourage. A disease he had been fighting for many years. The Kabyle singer will be buried in the Paris region.
After the announcement of Idir’s death, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune praised his memory: “With its disappearance, Algeria loses one of its monuments.“In 1976, Idir had made Kabyle music known to the four corners of the planet thanks to his album A Vava Inouva and his eponymous hit. The Algerian singer, who intended to be a geologist, will remain one of the most famous ambassadors of the Kabyle community like the footballer Zinedine Zidane. The sociologist Pierre Bourdieu paid him a fabulous tribute during his lifetime: “He is not a singer like the others. He’s a member of every family. “
Idir has recorded many duets with the stars of French song
His destiny changed when he replaced the singer Nouara at short notice in 1973 on Radio Alger. His song in Berber language Vava Inouva won over listeners and the world. During his career, Idir recorded seven studio albums and put his guitar and microphone aside for ten years (1981-1991). In 2007, the Kabyle singer released the album France of colors, in the middle of the campaign for the French presidential election marked by debates on immigration and identity. Idir had shared the stage with the stars of French song as Maxime Le Forestier, Charles Aznavour, Francis Cabrel or Patrick Bruel, with whom he shared a duet on stage in 2017 after the release of his latest album, Here and elsewhere, in which he sings in French and Kabyle.
