The shameful flag against Canada’s goalkeeper

Undoubtedly one of the cruellest and most reprehensible attitudes observed by fans at the World Cup in Qatar. It happened in the match that Croatia beat Canada 4-1. The victim: Milan Boriano, goalkeeper of the North American team. A group of supporters of the European team carried a flag that used an advertisement for agricultural machinery company John Deere, whose slogan reads ‘nothing runs like a deer’ (nothing runs like a deer).

The Croatians crossed out the word deere and put Borjan, and above it an inscription that read “Knin 95”. How come? There is a historical explanation. The war that ended with the dissolution of Yugoslavia began in 1991, in June of that year the Croatians proclaimed their independence but this was not accepted by the Serbian minorities who inhabited the country and formed the Serbian Republic of Krajina, whose capital was Knin, homeland of Borjan and his parents.

In 1995 the Croats, supported by the Bosnians, launched Operation Storm on Knin, in an attack that caused at least 2,500 deaths and some 200,000 displaced towards Serbia. Among them were seven-year-old Milan and his parents.

In fact, many of the people who managed to escape did so aboard tractors. Hence the use of the John Deere brand by fans. According to Serbian website Kurir, the fans who attacked Borjan were more concerned about attacking the goalkeeper than the match.

AC Milan lived in Belgrade and later moved to Canada with his family, where he continued to play football, became international and was part of the national team in 2011.
