The Senate confirms Pedro Janer as secretary of Public Security

The Senate confirmed today, out loud, Pedro Janer as the new head of the Department of Public Security (DSP).

“It seems to me that his 27 years of experience in the federal system, in addition to his six years in the military, give him the necessary skills to manage a department with seven attached agencies,” Martínez said in a telephone interview with The new day.

Today, at 10:30 a.m., the Appointments Committee held an executive hearing attended by the nominee in the company of his 21-year-old son. Governor Wanda Vázquez appointed Janer to the leadership of DSP on December 20.

Janer headed the DEA on an interim basis almost until his retirement from the agency in 2016. Since then he has worked as a security consultant. As part of his work, he developed anti-drug operations in the Caribbean area, the United States, Mexico and Bolivia. Under his leadership in the DEA, arrests of drug traffickers such as Ángel Ayala Vázquez, alias Ángelo Millones, and José Figueroa Acosto, known as Junio ​​Cápsula, took place.

On the day of his nomination, Janer assured that he would give continuity to everything that is working in the businesses assigned to the Department and that his mission would be to strengthen those areas that need support and foster cooperation with the US law and order agencies.
