Canadians are going through housing hell. Since Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister, rents and mortgage costs have doubled. Rents reached a record average of $2,196 per month. It is now necessary 25 ans for the average Toronto family to save for a down payment. Before Trudeau, you could repay an entire mortgage in this time frame. Over the past year, the cost of renting an apartment with a roommate jumped 18.5 percent, making it more expensive than living alone when Trudeau was first elected.

I’ve already explained why Justin Trudeau is responsible for doubling rent, deposits and mortgage costs, read it here. And you can watch my documentary on housing hell ici.

But it’s even worse. Trudeau and his Housing Minister, Sean Fraser, have been traveling the country, doling out your money to local gatekeepers who are driving up real estate prices by blocking home construction.

In Vancouver, $1.3 million is added to the cost of a home by government auditors, according to CD Howe. This means that the main cost of a new home in Vancouver is not the land, labor or lumber. It’s bureaucracy and taxes. What did Justin Trudeau do? He put the same guards back a check to say “job well done”.

In Winnipeg, the NIMBY municipal government deliberately delayed, according to a court ruling against the city, the process of approving a massive new housing project that would have meant more housing for Canadians. When a planner flatly refused to assist in this unethical plot, he was replaced by a guard who did. Justin Trudeau and Sean Fraser rewarded this behavior by handing another check to the local guards for 122 million dollars for doing a “good job” building more housing.

Federal money cannot fund controllers who make life unaffordable for Canadians

One of the many federal infrastructure programs that Justin Trudeau is responsible for is the Canada Community Futures Fund. Just last year, the CCBF, through agreements between each province and the federal government, sent $2.4 billion to the provinces for infrastructure projects. These agreements expire on 31 mars 2024 for all provinces and territories, and on March 1st for Quebec.

We know that Justin Trudeau is not afraid to impose his program on provinces and cities. Earlier this week, radical Liberal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault announcement that the federal government was going to stop funding roads.

They won’t be happy until you live in a million dollar mud hut and spend all your days stuck in traffic on pothole-filled roads, or better yet, you won’t even drive or own a house at all.

This government has done nothing to fire guards and build houses.

Canadians deserve better than that: they deserve a government that has a sensible plan to cut red tape and get houses built. Conservatives have this plan: a mathematical formula that will reward cities that build houses and punish those that don’t.

If they exceed the target, they should receive a bonus. If they miss the target, they should receive a penalty. Small municipalities should be exempt from penalties but eligible for bonuses.

The CCBF infrastructure agreements are due for renewal next month, so we need to act now. Justin Trudeau must immediately adopt my common sense plan.

But if it doesn’t, a sensible Conservative government will get houses built, instead of just empty promises, by making building houses the main focus of infrastructure funding.

Shovels in the ground, keys in doors, and houses you can afford. It’s just common sense.
