The Secret Reason Behind Kate Middleton’s Clutch – Shielding from Unwanted Handshakes

A neat Alexander McQueen dress that falls below the knee (okay, more and more a ZARA blazer these days), a good pair of Gianvito Rossi’s and the hair perfectly styled: that is Kate’s style all over. But what is also never missing from an outfit of the princess is a good clutch. And according to etiquette experts, this does not (only) have to do with fashion or handy storage space.

Small bag

Kate has been showing up to one royal event after another for as long as we can remember wearing the most unique outfits. Besides a good mood, a polite smile and a perfect haircut, there is something else that the Princess of Wales never, ever forgets: a modest clutch. She has them in all colors, shapes and sizes you can think of, but whether she does it for the finishing touch of her outfit? No. At least, according to etiquette experts, there is a completely different reason behind the use of that small bag.

To shake hands

“The Duchess uses her clutch as a shield,” etiquette expert William Hanson previously said of Kate. “She doesn’t want to shake hands with just anyone, and that clutch ensures that she doesn’t have to.” The fact is that it is an unwritten rule that you do not extend your hand to a member of the royal family – unless they first take the initiative themselves.

Uncomfortable

The clutch is a convenient way to avoid polite, yet unwanted handshakes. According to Hanson, there are other ways to avoid awkward situations and the clutch is a sign that Kate isn’t quite comfortable in her royal role yet. In principle, a polite smile should suffice when she doesn’t want to shake hands – although many male royals still use a trick to avoid an unwanted handshake: they often walk with their hands behind their backs.
