The second step towards freedom of travel

Travel to 31 European countries – such as Croatia, Italy and Greece – will be possible again from June 16, but a travel warning applies to Lombardy. Four countries are exempt from the rule.

Travel to neighboring countries (except Italy) is currently possible again. Now Austria is taking the next step: For most EU countries plus Iceland, Switzerland, Norway, absolute freedom of travel will again apply from June 16, the Federal Government announced on Wednesday. That had already been announced in the past few days, after a round table on Wednesday it became official. However, there are four major exceptions: Sweden, Great Britain, Spain and Portugal, where the Covid 19 infection numbers have not yet decreased sufficiently, said Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP).

As for Italy, the Lombardy region still has a travel warning. The government relies on the responsibility of the Austrians. “Urgent recommendation: Please do not travel to this region”, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) explains the function of such a travel warning. In general, however, the recommendation also applies to spend the vacation in Austria.

No self-isolation, no Covid test

The regulation of entry restrictions will therefore expire at midnight on June 15 and will not be extended for most European countries. Travel would then be possible from June 16 at midnight without any conditions on return – such as a negative Corona test or a 14-day home quarantine.

Germany’s Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) announced on Wednesday afternoon that border controls on neighboring countries would end on June 15.

The State Department had Tuesday officially only the planned opening of the Croatian border confirmed on this date. Earlier, the Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic announced via Twitter that he had agreed with Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) in a phone call that “the Austrian government will take a decision tomorrow to lift restrictions on passenger traffic between Croatia and Austria from mid-June. ” The opening of the border to the other countries will be final on Wednesday at the Alexander meeting Schallenberg (ÖVP) with Minister of Health Rudolf Anschober (Greens), Interior Minister Karl Nehammer and Minister of Europe Karoline Edtstadler (both ÖVP) in the Federal Chancellery, the Foreign Ministry said.
