The Saeima commission addresses the Ambassador of Belarus to Latvia and calls for an end to human rights violations

The Saeima The Commission on Human Rights and Public Affairs calls on Belarus and all its officials to put an immediate end to and prevent human rights abuses and to abide by the constitution. The letter also called for the immediate release of unjustified detainees and the investigation of any human rights violations, the guarantee of the free operation of independent media and journalists, and the restriction of the internet.

“Following the elections in Belarus on 9 August, we have videos, testimonies and other evidence that suggest that the country’s constitution and human rights are currently being violated,” said the chairman of the Human Rights Commission. Artuss Neighbor.

“A particularly serious violation is the illegal detention, torture and cruel treatment of peaceful people. In fact, the power structures have turned against their people, constitutional system and human rights,” Kaimiņš continued.

The letter states that Article 1 of the Constitution of Belarus states that it is a democratic state governed by the rule of law. In a democracy and the rule of law, there is the rule of law: any action by the state against an individual can only take place in accordance with rights, especially human rights. This human right also provides for an absolute prohibition of torture or ill-treatment, no derogation from this prohibition is expressed in the letter.

The letter prepared by the Human Rights Commission also emphasizes that the Belarusian forces have detained and even physically influenced many Belarusian and foreign journalists. The independence of the media is also limited, and the Internet has not been fully available in the country for a long time, which, probably contrary to official statements, has taken place as a result of actions taken by state institutions.

Diverse, free and independent media are a precondition for respect for human rights and the existence of a democratic state system. If the freedom and independence of the media is not ensured in the country, as well as the work of journalists is hindered, then the democratic state system is not able to function normally. Free media and the Internet allow not only to find information, but also to share it effectively, as well as to communicate with others and express their opinions, the letter emphasizes.

According to the official preliminary results of the presidential election in Belarus, the current head of state Alexander Lukashenko won 80.08% of the vote, while opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovska won 10.09%, but the opposition believes that the election results are fake.

Thousands have been injured or detained in Belarus by violently suppressing protests against blatant election irregularities and falsifying results. More than 250 victims are being treated in hospitals, and there are also deaths.
