Lapins was the commander of the Central Military District of Russia, but during the full-scale aggression of Russia, he began to command the “Center” group.
In October, his name stopped appearing in reports from the front. Then the commander of the combined group of Russian troops, Sergei Surovikin, came to the fore, while Lapin was criticized by the most ardent supporters of the war – Ramzan Kadyrov and Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Some war bloggers blamed Lapin for Russia’s failures at the front, but Kadyrov called Lapin untalented for the Russian withdrawal from Liman.
In 2017, Lapin was the chief of staff of the group of Russian Syrian troops, but in November of the same year he became the head of the Central Military District command. From October 2018 to January 2019 he led the Russian group in Syria.
