The Quebec Student Sports Network (RSEQ) Côte-Nord can say “finally! “. A first regional championship took place after several months on Sunday in Essipit. It was the cross-country one for student-athletes from ten high schools in the region.
No less than 180 young people took part in this first regional championship after all the upheavals of the pandemic.
They came from the Polyvalente des Berges des Bergeronnes, the Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Cœur school in Sacré-Cœur, the Polyvalente des Rivières de Forestville, the Polyvalente des Baies de Baie-Comeau, the school Serge-Bouchard secondary school (ESSM) in Baie-Comeau, Jean-du-Nord / Manikoutai schools in Sept-Îles, Teueikan school in Mingan, Monseigneur-Labrie school in Havre-Saint-Pierre and Multipurpose Horizon-Blanc by Fermont.
If the rain was present at the time of the visit to the course, it stopped for the start of the races.
It should be noted that the podium of the youngest female category is occupied by the same girls as that of the female Mosquito during the last regional cross-country championship, that of 2019 at the Gallix station. Maude Lavoie Nadeau won the event. Élisabeth Martin and Justine Blais, however, exchanged places in the standings.
In the list of banners, the two Baie-Comeau establishments stole the show. Serge-Bouchard high school dropped out four, those of the youngest female, female cadet, male cadet and juvenile male. The Polyvalente des Baies has the other two, those of the youngest male and the young female.
According to Julie Bernier of the RSEQ Côte-Nord, a dozen young people should take part in the Provincial Championship on October 23, organized by the Héritage regional high school, on the trails of Michel-Chartrand Park in Longueuil.
