The Role of Metropolitan Peter in Making Moscow the Capital of All Rus’

In 1325, due to the constant raids of the Tatar-Mongols, Metropolitan of Kiev, Moscow and All Rus’ Peter transferred his cathedra to Moscow. This contributed to the fact that the city became the capital. In this regard, City Day in Moscow could be celebrated on the day of memory of St. Peter (September 6), said Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’.

So far, Moscow Day is celebrated on the first or second Saturday of September. The Patriarch recalled that Metropolitan Peter, while in Moscow, was called the Metropolitan of Kiev and All Rus’, “because Kiev was historically the first capital of All Rus’, and the Kiev metropolitans had special care for the entire Russian Church.”

“But the tragic time has come for ancient Kyiv – it was practically destroyed by the invasion of nomads, and it was not possible to save the life of this city as the capital of Rus’. Therefore, St. Peter moved to the northeast of Rus’, inaccessible to the nomads, since the nomads won with the power of their cavalry, and in the northeast, the forest, where it is useless, becomes easy prey for the soldiers, ”said Patriarch Kirill.

According to Patriarch Kirill, if Saint Peter had not moved his see, then “Moscow would hardly have risen, as if we did not celebrate this service here, in all likelihood, it would never have become the capital.”

Today, Patriarch Kirill officiated at the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, founded by St. Peter, and his relics are still in the cathedral.

“It is sad that this story of St. Peter is somehow little mentioned today by our historians. It is sad that young people know little about this, and even when celebrating the Day of the City, we in no way associate it with the memory of St. Peter. Probably, it would be necessary to tie, because if it were not for St. Peter, there would be no Moscow as a capital. I appeal to everyone who could influence this – make the day of the city of Moscow the day of remembrance of St.

He noted that Prince Yuri Dolgoruky certainly played a role in the rise of Moscow, but then, without the blessing and participation of the Church, no city could become the capital. The Patriarch also urged to pray to Metropolitan Peter when “Our Fatherland entered the time of trials.”

“The enemy of the human race and the enemy of Rus’ has led the state of affairs to such a nightmare that again the brother raises enmity against his brother. Organically unified ties between the north and south of Russia, between the modern Russian Federation and Ukraine, are being cut off. Well, how not to grieve about this, not to ask the Lord to stop this madness, this enmity, so that again, with one mouth and one heart, as one people, we can glorify the name of God and the saints, one of whom for all of us is the most important Metropolitan Peter of Kiev, Moscow and All Rus’,” Patriarch Kirill said.
